How to control your smart home using Google Home

  • ilevia has made it possible to use Google Home with KNX devices, Vimar By Me, My Home by BTicinoZ-Wave and other protocols by EVE System.
  • Check that you are using the same google account on Google Home, Google assistant apps and on the voice recognition Google devices.
  • After the installation of our system the user, without using any app, will be able to control devices simply using the Google Assistant voice recognition or through Google Home.

In the following sections, we will explain how to configure a KNX light via Eve Manager and the related configuration of the Google Assistant.

How the comunication steps are carried out in the EVE Home automation system Google home integration

Google Home speakers enable users to speak voice commands to interact with services through Google’s intelligent personal assistant called Google Assistant. A large number of services, both in-house and third-party, are integrated, allowing users to listen to music, control playback of videos or photos, or receive news updates entirely by voice. Google Home devices also have integrated support for home automation, letting users control smart home appliances and KNX devices with their voice. Multiple Google Home devices can be placed in different rooms in a home to control specific devices in a specific room. In this guide, you will learn how to set up simple KNX light in a living room and control it through voice.

ASK GOOGLE:

Lights:

Voice command:  Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then…
To turn on/off a light “Turn on <light name>”
Dim a light “Dim the <light name>”
Brighten a light “Brighten the <light name>”
Set a light brightness to a certain percentage “Set <light name> to 50%”
Dim/Brighten lights by a certain percentage “Dim/Brighten <light name> by 50%”
Change the color of a light “Turn <light name> green”
Turn on/off all lights in room “Turn on/off lights in <room name>”
Turn on/off all lights “Turn on/off all of the lights”

Scene:

Voice commands: Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then…
Activate a scenario Activate <Scene name>

Switches, Outlet:

Voice command: Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then…
Turn On/Off a switch “Turn on/off the <Switch, Outlet name>”

Valve:

Voice commands: Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then…
Open / Close Valve
Open / Close <valve name>

Shutter, Blinds, Curtains:

Voice commands: Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then…
Open / Close Shutter Open / Close the <Shutter, Blind, curtain name>
Set the Shutter to a certain opening percentage Set the <Shutter, Blind, curtain name> to 50%

Lock:

Voice commands: Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then…
Lock / Unlock Lock / Unlock <Lock name>

Thermostat

Voice commands: Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then…
Set the Thermostat temperature to a sepcific value in degree celsius Set the <Thermostat name> to 22 degrees celsius
Setting the Thersmostat mode Set the <Thermostat name> in comfort
Ask the current temperature What’s the <Thermostat name / room where the thermostat has been placed in>
Ask to raise / decrease the temperature and set the mode accordingly Make it warmer / Make it cooler

A reminder before continuing:

    • Google Home device is not required, you can simply use the Google Assistant App on your smartphone/tablet.
    • Please refer to this documentation to set up Google Home devices
    • Download and Install EVE Logic plugin to enable plugins (Follow this link);
    • Update your server with the latest firmware available following this guide;

LINKING PROCEDURE

This setup guide comprend a basic knowledge of the Voice Control Manager component to set up a pre-exitsting Ilevia Manager project.

How to create a new home in Google home app in order to integrate the ilevia's server

1. After you have installed the Google Home app open it and this will be the first screen that you’ll see. Tap on “Create home”.

2. Set a nick name to your new Home then proceed with the configuration

3. Tap on Home or Create another home if you have more devices in different houses, for this example we will use the default Home.

4. Tap on + Add device.

5. Tap on Works with google.

6. Now click the search icon on the top right of the screen and type Ilevia Smart Home. The other one with (classic) written in the name, is the one used in the previous integration procedure (deprecated).

7. Now click Scan QR code.

8. To grant the access of the skill to your smartphone camera “Allow“, finally frame the Voice Control Manager QR code.

Alternatively, you can use the Ilevia code as access token that you can find within the Voice Control Manager component properties.

9. Click Agree and link in order to allow Google to know which device do you have.

10. Once you successfully registered to the skill, you will find all the configuration done within the Voice Control Manager.

HOW TO ADD NEW DEVICES

How to add new configured devices from the Ilevia's configuration software in the Google Home app.

1. Enter the devices Tab and click + Add.

2. Tap on Works with google.

3. Click on Check for new devices.

3. Now click Scan QR code.

4. To grant the access of the skill to your smartphone camera “Allow“, finally frame the Voice Control Manager QR code.

Alternatively, you can use the Ilevia code as access token that you can find within the Voice Control Manager component properties.

5. Click Agree and link in order to allow Google to know which device do you have.

Now the google Home skill will start searching for new devices. Once the searching ends you will find the new devices within the Devices tab in the Google Home app.

Alternatively: if you are planning to add other components to be controlled via Google Home inside EVE Manager you will need to tell to Google Home device or the Google Assistant App “Ok Google, update devices” to implement them correctly.
